Finally... there is a vegetable garden!
June 13th marked the day we were able to plant our corn and beans in the garden. We started this process several weeks ago and were constantly bombarded with rain and cold weather. The plowing that was done earlier only created dirt clods the size of soft balls or larger. This was not helpful when seeds need finer soil to sprout in. My husband plowed, plowed and plowed until the soil broke up into earth that was workable. After plowing the ground needs to be raked and then the rows are set.
We string a metallic ribbon across each row to (attempt) keep the crows away. Supposedly the ribbon is enough to make them wary of entering the garden. Does it work? Maybe a little! :) Eventually we will put a fence around the garden...a temporary fence made out of field fencing.
As we were working I noticed the moon just above the trees, in the sky. If you look closely you can see it. I wonder if the set of the moon will help with our garden success? They say it does.
Beans....pole beans...that means there will be some posts and wire put in place later so they can climb.
Corn...just needs lots and lots of water.
We also planted pumpkins, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes and flowers in this area. It will be 60 plus days before most of the vegetables are ready to harvest!!

I guess we got a gardening head-start on you (I'll remember to be grateful for that now that it's 100+ here). We've eaten all our radishes and turnips and have started on the spaghetti squash, okra and peppers. We converted our garden to raised beds this year and can tell that it will be much easier for us to manage. I have been making art for as long as I can remember - I don't remember starting, just always doing. (You can see the butterflies closer-up on my website.) I am so very blessed and happy to be working as an artist "for real" now that my girls are grown and I have more time for it. I'm going to look at your blog more closely for examples of your art. Way to go!
Oh, brother...I just left a comment to you on MY blog. Can you just go there and read it? It's too long for me to remember what all I said and I don't know how to move it to yours! I'm really not very good at this yet...
You answered my question - my husband is too busy to take on yet another of my ideas! Though he's always willing. That was my big hesitation so, I think we'll just stick to family/friend weddings - just for fun.
I've never heard of the art organization you mentioned, but will definitely check into it. Sounds perfect. I want to read more about Heidi and her husband. She is amazing and I don't mean just the craftsmanship. The symbolism and conceptual aspect of each piece really touched me. I hope for great blessings and success for them. Did I read that he is a woodworker? Where can his work be seen?
May you have a bountiful harvest. What pretty earth you have there...
my goodness, what a huge vege garden. I dont know anyone who plant their own vege here, most of them live in towns, so vege planting is out of the question. So nice to have fresh and pesticide free vege on the plates. Happy planting and may you have a great harvest...
You are going to have lots of yummy veggies this year.
I was thinking it was to late to plant a veggie garden but hey, what do I know. Maybe I still have time? I'll have to check on that.
Hugs
Joanne
what a visual treat....
Oh, it looks like your going to have a awesome garden. Good thing your planting corn as the price has tripled on it because of the midwest floods. I can't wait to see your bountiful harvest. I plan on having a garden next year and I am going to try to plant by the moon too.
