This guy is a Pacific Sideband Snail. He lives in our woods, and was out crawling around after the rain last week. We don't usually see them intact but do find the shells. He had never seen a human before and didn't shrink into that shell on his back. He stayed as is even after three flashes of bright light from the camera. Slugs are more common and not nearly as interesting. The most common remark when a slug is seen is "ick!" "Where's the slug bait?" I didn't encounter even one slug on this day!
This little creature was left alone because there is plenty for him to eat in the woods. But, he better stay away from my garden because the bait it out!

Very interesting and such a good picture.
A friend was telling me that their yard is infested with snails this year. Not a good thing.
So far so good in our yard.
That's a nice looking snail. Good thing Willow wasn't with you or she would have crushed it with her foot!! :0)
Yup. Keep me away from the snails! I do step on them because it's either them or the garden here.
However, I must say that your snail is in his own habitat and I wouldn't bother him. He's just too cute~
That was so cool
my earth Girl Grandchild would want it for a pet
we don't really see them because we are not a very wet climate here...now rolly Pollies we have. (and she does call them her pets)
Ok..something new for me -- gastropods! Sounds so alien to me. You will be guessing that snails aren't my good friend in the garden, they are destructive and time to give them a beer party at times. However, somehow..I see much lesser than them nowadays but have more problems with grasshoppers..which I still dont know how to deal with them for now :(
OK this may have been the first time I sort of felt sorry for a snail. Now I'm going to always wonder what they are thinking and feeling and won't want to kill them. Darn you! LOL
Hugs,
Joanne
This is just the coolest picture ever! I have never seen one of these before, although we have lots of snails up here in the "northwoods"!
Thanks, Julene. I passed on the snail info.
You keep those snails in Oregon please.
ICK!... I don't like harming creatures either... Hope he keeps out of your veggie patch! Happy Day, Julene ((HUGS))
We seem to have a lot fewer slugs this year. EBet's ducks may very well be the cause. Snails are rather interesting aren't they. I sort of wish they didn't eat so many of my garden goodies, especially my lilies.
